In an effort to cut down on billion dollar losses, the US Postal Service announced plans to consolidate or close 223 mail processing centers (.pdf) nationwide beginning in May or June. The closures would put 35,000 jobs at risk of being cut.

The USPS will give employees 120 days' notice and many will be offered positions in other processing centers while others will be encouraged to retire.

Other proposed measures to cut down costs include cutting Saturday delivery service, closing post offices and increasing the price of a first-class stamp to $0.50.

Declining first-class mail volumes and a congressional mandate to prefund retirement health care benefits has caused the agency to face $18 billion in losses by 2015 if no action is taken.
