In Miami, Florida, a police officer shot and killed a naked homeless man after he wouldn't stop mauling the face of another homeless man on Saturday.

Witnesses saw the horrific attack and flagged down a passing police officer. The officer told the attacker to stop but when he continued to eat the other man's face, the officer had to shoot the attacker several times.

The unidentified victim had about 75% of his face missing and is in critical condition.

The attacker was identified as Rudy Eugene, 31, and is suspected to have been under the influence of a drug called bath salts.

Bath salts contain synthetic stimulants mephedrone, MDPV, and methylone. They are known to elevate body temperature, cause deliriousness and extreme physical strength. Possession of the stimulants was made illegal by the Drug Enforcement Administration under emergency order.

Eugene had previously been arrested for mostly misdemeanors. Eugene's ex-wife said he had been violent with her and divorced him in 2007.

Other homeless people reported seeing Eugene in the area and looking confused.
