The Swiss Department of Defense says it has lost track of about 10,000 government issued guns because thousands of soldiers have not returned them after completing their service.

Swiss soldiers are required to return issued guns within 60 days of the end of service but about 4,000 veterans have failed to do so.

The army is issuing letters to remind veterans to return firearms and other issued equipment.

Another 6,000 veterans can't be reached because current addresses are not on record. The army is getting assistance from the federal states to find them.
