Actor Andy Griffith, best known for his starring roles in The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, has died at age 86.

Griffith died at about 7 a.m. at his home on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. A cause of death has not been provided.

The Andy Griffith Show ran from 1960 to 1968 and his portrayal of the folksy Sheriff Andy Taylor earned him the title of "America's Favorite Sheriff".

Griffith also produced and starred in the TV legal drama Matlock which aired from 1986 to 1995.
