Yahoo announced that it has appointed Google's Marissa Mayer as Chief Executive Officer and board member effective July 17, 2012.

Mayer was among the first employees at Google and its first female engineer. Her most recent post was as vice president in charge of local, maps location services.

Mayer succeeds interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, who took over for ousted CEO Scott Thomson following resume inaccuracies.

Yahoo has been struggling in recent years and is now undergoing a massive restructuring which has resulted in a 14% cut of its workforce and the shut down of about 50 services.
