In Japan, scientists have found that leaked radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant damaged in last year's earthquake and tsunami has caused mutations in at least one species of butterfly.

Scientists found major physical changes in successive generations of the pale grass blue butterfly including malformed wings, legs, antennae and eyes, as well as the disappearance of their spotted markings.

The findings suggest that the contaminants are causing ecological damage and scientists are calling for further research on other insects and animals near the Fukushima area.

Additionally, scientists said humans are far more resistant to radiation so the impact is not likely to be as significant as in the butterfly.
