President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, earned the nickname of the "poorest" president in the world after revealing to a Spanish newspaper that he earns a monthly salary of $12,500 and only keeps $1,250 for himself, donating the rest to charity.

Mujica says his biggest expense is his VW car, valued at $1,945. He lives in a farmhouse with his wife, who is a Senator and also donates part of her salary to charity.

Mujica, a former guerrilla fighter and member of the left-wing coalition Broad Front, was elected president in 2010. Under his leadership, Uruguay has become known as one of the least corrupt countries in South America.

American Presidents John F. Kennedy and Herbert Hoover also donated their salaries while in office.
