Hundreds of Libyan protesters angry over militias and last week's deadly attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi in which 4 Americans were killed, stormed the headquarters of the radical Islamist group suspected in the attack.

Militants fled as protesters took over the building of the militant group Ansar al-Sharia and burned a vehicle at the compound. Some claim at least 20 captives were freed during the takeover.

The Libyan army took over the Ansar al-Sharia headquarters at the request of the protesters. The army general said they intend to take over other militia buildings as well, as long as the people allow them to do so.

Some protesters had mistakenly attacked a pro-government militia building which some say was the result of anti-government groups pushing protesters there as they tried to capitalize on the euphoria from the Ansar al-Sharia takeover.

The storming of the Ansar al-Sharia headquarters came after thousands demonstrated in Benghazi earlier on Friday against armed militias.

Initial reports say Ansar al-Sharia organized the protest against an anti-Islamic film prior to the consulate attack which killed 4 Americans, including US Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The Libyan prime minister said 8 people have been detained in connection to the consulate attack, including some members of Ansar al-Sharia.
