On Friday, the Environmental Protection Agency said Hyundai and Kia overstated mileage estimates on fuel consumption by 1 to 6 miles per gallon for about 900,000 vehicles sold since late 2010.

Both Hyundai and Kia blamed the overstated mileage ratings on procedural errors at a jointly operated test center in South Korea. The companies apologized and said they will reimburse current or former owners of 13 car models between 2011 and 2013 model years.

Drivers will receive personalized credit cards to cover the cost of extra fuel for the difference in the lower miles per gallon and the EPA combined fuel economy rating. Payment will be based on the fuel price in owner's area and their own actual miles driven.

Additionally, Hyundai and Kia will issue a 15% bonus to make up for inconvenience caused by the false fuel economy claims.
