In eastern Afghanistan, 10 girls, aged between 9 and 11, were killed in a landmine explosion after they had been collecting firewood and one of them hit the mine with an axe. At least 2 other girls were also injured.

It is unclear if the land mine was an old one left over from the Afghans' war against Soviet troops, or a new one planted in the current conflict between Taliban insurgents and US-led NATO forces.
