The Transportation Security Administration has canceled its $5 million contract with the manufacturer of the controversial "naked image" body scanners because it failed to deliver software to make the images less revealing and protect the privacy of passengers.

After OSI Systems Inc. failed to meet a congressional deadline to redesign its software, TSA will begin removing 174 scanners from US airports at the company's cost.

OSI's machines will be replaced by 60 scanners built by L-3 Communications Holdings. The L-3 uses radio waves and shows hidden objects on an avatar on a screen without showing the image of a passenger.
