Hero 4-year-old pulls little sister from wreckage after car crash kills their mother

The girls' mother, 26-year-old Jessica Rath, was enroute with her daughters to pick up her husband from a fishing trip around 2 a.m. Wednesday. She apparently fallen asleep at the wheel and veered off the road, hitting a tree head on. 

The 4-year-old managed to pull her younger sister from the wreckage and cover both of them with a blanket.  

The accident was not visible from the road but around 8 a.m. an alert driver noticed a fresh cut in the bark of a tree and decided to investigate. He found the girls huddled together and called authorities.

Both girls were first taken to an Oregon hospital but the 2-year-old was later airlifted to a Portland hospital with serious injuries.
