McDonald's Breaks Ties With Major Egg Supplier

McDonald's announced it will no longer accept eggs from Sparboe Farms, the 5th largest egg producer in the country, due to violations found by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and concerns about alleged animal cruelty.

The FDA cited 5 different locations of Sparboe Farms for 13 violations of the federal egg rule which is aimed at preventing salmonella outbreaks. The FDA stepped up inspections and enforcement after a 2010 salmonella outbreak traced to Wright County Eggs affected more than 1,900 people.

McDonald's announcement came after Mercy For Animals, an animal rights group, released findings of a 3-month investigation of Sparboe's facilities which exposed unsanitary and inhumane treatment of animals.

McDonald's issued a statement saying all eggs are thoroughly cooked before sold so customers should have no health concerns.
