Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta made history when she and her female partner of 2 years, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell, were chosen for the Navy's traditional first kiss upon the return of the USS Oak Hill. Navy officials said it was the first time a same-sex couple was chosen for the traditional kiss.

Sailors and family members bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity to participate and Gaeta said she bought $50 worth of tickets. The money was used to host a Christmas party for the children of sailors. Gaeta said her chain of command and her fellow sailors fully supported her winning the spot.

In September 2011, President Obama signed the repeal of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" legal provision, which only allowed gays to serve in the military if they did not openly acknowledge their sexual orientation.
